Crank It Up

80s Music

The decade synthesizers took over the charts and MTV made the music video an art form.

If one sound defines the 1980s, it's the synthesizer. Affordable machines like the Yamaha DX7 and Roland Juno put lush, futuristic tones into the hands of bands everywhere, and suddenly pop music sounded like the future. Layer in drum machines like the Roland TR-808, and you had the sonic blueprint for the entire decade.

The MTV Revolution

Launched on 1 August 1981, MTV changed everything. For the first time, how a song looked mattered as much as how it sounded. Artists who mastered the music video — Michael Jackson, Madonna, Duran Duran — became global superstars almost overnight. Jackson's 14-minute "Thriller" (1983) turned the music video into cinema.

"Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll." — the first words ever spoken on MTV.

Genres That Defined the Decade

Synth-Pop & New Wave

Bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, The Human League, Tears for Fears and Eurythmics built shimmering pop out of electronics. It was danceable, moody and unmistakably modern.

The Pop Titans

Michael Jackson's Thriller (1982) became the best-selling album of all time. Madonna redefined pop stardom and reinvention, while Prince blurred funk, rock and pop into something entirely his own.

Hair Metal & Arena Rock

Big hair, bigger guitar solos: Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses packed stadiums and dominated late-night MTV.

The Birth of Hip-Hop

Hip-hop went from block parties to the mainstream. Run-DMC's collaboration with Aerosmith on "Walk This Way" (1986) smashed the wall between rap and rock, and acts like Grandmaster Flash and the Beastie Boys brought the culture to a global audience.

Did you know?

The Roland TR-808 drum machine sold poorly when it launched in 1980, but its booming bass and crisp claps became the heartbeat of hip-hop and dance music — making it one of the most influential instruments in modern music.
